John Bryant Cable

A tribute to the man and his poetry

(1855-1937)

Welcome to a tribute to a man who was one of Warren County, Pennsylvania's most distinguished residents during the last half of the 1800's and the early part of the 1900's. His poems were widely read and sought after by Warren County residents and others back in those days. Today they give us a glimpse into life more than a century ago in the rural area of Pennsylvania where he spent the majority of his life. Topics of his poetry range from social issues to nature and family. An intimate picture of his emotions and memories of life at the old homestead in Cable Hollow near Akeley, PA is painted in many of his poems. Cable Hollow was named for his grandfather Samuel Cable who settled there.

In these pages you will find the complete text of "The God I See and Other Poems" published as a book by the Roycrofters at their East Aurora, NY book shop in 1917. Also included here is the complete text of his short book "The teacher's Old Chair" also published by the Roycrofters. An ongoing search is being conducted to locate poems from the local Warren newspapers. As they are located they are included here.

John's obituary reported that he had written enough unpublished poems to fill 3 books. It is my goal to find as many of those that still exist to include here for all to see. I continue to search for all that I can find about John B. Cable, the man and his poetry. If you know anyone who might have information, poems, pictures, etc. I would love to obtain copies to include here. Email me at the address below.

I hope those who visit these pages enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed doing the work to make them available. These poems were meant to be shared for all time, not just in the days they were written. Thank you great-great uncle John for inspiring me to do this for you 64 years after you left this world.
